SUSTAFUELS is a European cluster of research and innovation projects aiming to advance the development and large-scale implementation of sustainable fuels for transport.
To date, the cluster brings together ten pioneering Horizon Europe projects, and its shared vision is a decarbonized transport sector powered by renewable and bio-based fuels. The cluster’s member projects are ALFAFUELS, ALGAESOL, CAPTUS, COCPIT, FUELGAE, ICARUS, NIAGARA, SusAlgaeFuel, SUNFUSION, and SUSTEPS.
Objectives and Methodology:
- Maximize technical innovation, impact, and deployment towards a greener and more circular transport system.
- Connecting the most innovative research efforts in Europe, the cluster intends to amplify the visibility and impact of individual projects and create the conditions for technical cooperation.
- Cluster members will collaborate on technical topics, share best practices in life cycle and techno-economic assessments, and align efforts to develop integrated and circular value chains.
- Improve the scalability, resource efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the advanced fuel technologies developed by the projects.
- Many of these projects focus on CO₂ utilization, solar energy conversion processes, and microalgae-based biorefineries. The technologies and fuels developed are intended for adoption in the aviation, maritime, and road transport sectors.
In the context of the cluster a webinar was organized involving CAPTUS Project, COCPIT, SUSTEPS, NIAGARA EU and in collaboration with REFOLUTION Project, entitled 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘼𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙤𝙣-𝙉𝙚𝙪𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙀𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚.
The webinar was divided into three parts:
- An interactive session based on the CAPTUS survey (Università degli Studi di Genova): https://lnkd.in/eZyHRXek
- Insights into ongoing work from SUSTEPS, COCPIT Project, and NIAGARA EU
- Citizen perspectives from VTT’s REFOLUTION Project research
The event was an opportunity to explore the importance of public support for the development of sustainable fuels and how communication, transparency, and public engagement can promote acceptance and understanding of these technologies.
Thanks to our colleagues at HELLENIQ Energy Papageorgiou Michaela, we had the opportunity to present SAF and Marine Fuels: Industry Reflections on Market Readiness and Strategic Challenges (COCPIT Project).
